Stanley

Stanley is one of those projects that is a combination of pure imagination, technical skills, and the ability to carve into the surface of what is really possible. I have seen mosaic boxes using a series of tapered pieces to create a circle, but I have never seen anything besides the circle. Whether that includes alternating pieces or all one type showcasing the grain pattern. Inspired by old paintings using the halo behind the head or sun for kings, I had a gear like shape in mind. Through being pinched for materials the execution/process came naturally. In previous projects to elongate pieces for a small panel I used a simple lap joint and turned them on their sides before gluing up. I realized that if I did this same practice with two different kinds of wood and then adding a taper on each piece, I should end up with this shape and colors I had in mind. Thus, Stanley was born, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Despite the rest of Stanley being pretty simple, it was such a sleek design and within my eyes a captivating accent side, the box really shined through as a unique one-of-a-kind piece. One that I was not only incorporating what I’ve seen others do, but adding to the pool of knowledge that is woodworking.
