Japanese carpentry is heavily influential to my work and so it is only natural and respectful that I take the time to practice the fundamentals of Kumiko. Something I find fascinating about Kumiko is that most of the patterns represent different aspects of nature. I see this as wonderful reconnection of the built environment with not only wood as a material, but nature inspired motifs to bring the outside in. I’m hoping to increase my collection of patterns that I feel confident in creating, and learn new Japanese techniques along the way.
